A set curriculum is not necessary for successful homeschooling but, whether you choose a full packaged curriculum, or draw from multiple sources, there are some amazing resources out there!
The suitability of resources is a very individual thing. Resources are listed here in good faith as recommended by our members. Parents are advised to check any planned resources and assess its suitability for their own individual family – different families have different values.
There is no need to spend a lot of money; see Home Education on a Budget before you buy.
This section is only a starting point. You can help keep it current by contacting us with any updates. Don’t forget to check what your library has, second-hand bookstores and of course, the internet. There are also Buy/Swap/Sell facebook groups for home educators e.g.

Probably the most popular christian science resource, written for homeschoolers and very appropriate for multi-age teaching.. Whilst it does have a text to read, the main difference to other science texts is that each book focuses in depth on one area of science, rather than a “spiral” approach commonly used in science. Children and teens are able to delve deeply into each topic, and whilst age appropriate language is used, particularly for primary aged kids, the science concepts and vocabulary are at much higher level. There are currently Jnr FLL and FLL competitions in Melbourne, and the number of home educated teams is growing every year. First.org is a worldwide organisation that fosters STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning by offering four streams of international level competitions.
- Junior First Lego League – for 6-9 year olds – uses Lego and requires a FLL Jnr kit ($20)
- First Lego League – for 9-16 year olds – uses Lego Mindstorms, Lego Technic and a field kit ($400 for one team kit, or $475 for 2 teams using one kit) to build a robot and solve field missions based on an environmental type theme; prepare and present a project based on the theme, and learn team working skills.
- First Tech Challenge – for 14-18 year olds – uses mechano type technology to build and program robots to compete (cost ~$500 for competition entry and re-useable kit)
- First Robotics Competition – for 14-18 year olds – “A large-scale robotics competition, FIRST® Robotics Competition brings together students and mentors to build robots that perform in a competitive but gracious environment against teams from all over the world. In building their robot and doing all the other things that go with an FIRST® Robotics Competition team, students learn valuable life skills like teamwork, collaboration, public speaking, technical science and engineering skills, Gracious Professionalism®, and others.” (entry fees are very expensive, so this requires sponsorship and business skills, which is something that the participants learn as well)

A relatively complete curriculum program for kids in the middle years. This is a nature based program, which revolves around the seasons. Being US-based the material will not match Australian seasons perfectly, making this not as complete as it would be for the northern hemisphere, but adjusted by 6 months and supplementing with Australian native flora and fauna studies, this could be an enjoyable program. The early primary and the high school levels are still being created.

No program is deemed complete enough, and so the resources below can only be noted as one among many of the resources you will use when handing in a plan or undergoing review. If you choose to use a complete program, still look at the other KLA resource lists for supplements to use alongside the complete program, and to include in plans and reviews. Many programs that are touted as being complete are often missing LOTE. It is also important to remember that any program that comes from outside of Australia will be missing key areas, especially in the HASS subjects where the focus will be on the country of origin rather than Australia.
Please note that registration in Victoria is straight forward and does not require a purchase of curriculum.

Online social media pinboard, where people “pin” things they find on the web according to their interests. There are many home educators sharing their resources, and you can easily search for your particular needs. All subject areas. Pinterest isn’t only great for finding resources, but is also very handy for keeping track of your own finds. Create your own boards, for subjects, topics and more, pin links to various websites and resources in your chosen boards. Great way to categorise and bookmark interesting websites, especially helpful for unit studies and similar.
